India leapfrog Eng to 4th position in ODI rankings

New Delhi, Oct 18: The 2-0 lead in the ongoing five-match series against England has helped India claim the fourth position in the ICC ODI rankings and they can cling to the spot by securing one more win.

England had started the series in fourth position on 113 ratings points but have now slipped to 110 whereas India have jumped from 112 to 115 points.

India just need to win one more match to not only secure the series but also the number-four position. If they clinch a 5-0 series win and South Africa lose their opening two matches against Australia, India could even rise to third place in the table, just one rating point behind second-placed Sri Lanka.

However, England can still finish in the pre-series fourth position, provided they win the remaining three matches in the series, the ICC said in a statement.

India take on England in the third ODI in Mohali on Thursday.

In the rankings for ODI batsmen, Virat Kohli has climbed five places to fourth position after scores of 37 and 112 not out in Hyderabad and New Delhi, respectively.

Gautam Gambhir has also improved his ranking and now jointly shares the 11th position with Jacques Kallis after scores of 32 and 84 not out.

The batting table is still headed by South Africa captain Hashim Amla while an injured AB de Villiers is second and Australia's Shane Watson is third.

In the rankings for ODI bowlers, England's Graeme Swann continues to lead the table with New Zealand's Daniel Vettori second.

Indian off-spinner R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have also gained valuable spots. Ashwin is now in 36th position after rising five places while Jadeja has climbed six places to 38th spot. India's fast bowler Praveen Kumar has also returned to the top 20 in 20th position.

It was a fair result: Alastair Cook

London, Sep 12: India might be feeling hard-done by the weather gods but England skipper Alastair Cook said the tie forced by rain interruptions in the fourth ODI here was a fair result.

Cook was a relieved man after the tie allowed his side to clinch the five-cricket match series by taking an unassailable 2-0 lead here yesterday.

England were 270 for eight when the third and final rain intervention forced the match to end in a tie under the Duckworth-Lewis rule.

"It''s human. When you''re ahead of the game and get to go off, you''re obviously going to be happier than the other team.

It was quite clear when we came off the first time we wanted to go back because we were behind," Cook told reporters in the post-match press conference.

"When we came off second time, when we were ahead, if we are all being honest we would have quite liked it to have rained for another hour and we wouldn''t have had the last few overs," he said.

"We ended up having to bat for the weather and with Duckworth-Lewis ball by ball, it was an extremely tough situation for both the sides. I think it probably was a fair result," he added.

Cook lauded Ravi Bopara for his 96-run knock that held the .

"The way Ravi (Bopara), Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann held their nerves and got us almost over the line, and to win the series because of it, makes us delighted" .

Bopara, who was caught on the edge of the midwicket fence by Ravindra Jadeja, though was disappointed with the result.

"It''s extremely disappointing that we didn''t end up winning. I never quite knew when to accelerate with the weather and big black clouds lurking round the back there," he said.

Revenge or test for Team India against England

Hyderabad, Oct 13: Team India have been very successful in the past few years claiming the first World Twenty20 International Cricket championship and crowned World Champions in 2011, though the recent success nobody would have thought Team India would be white-washed in the recent tour of England.

The new look Indian team have just four survivors from the side which played in the world cup final, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Guatam Gambhir, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina. Injured Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel have been ruled out.

Poor performances in the previous series also cost first choice and pacer S Sreesanth a place in the squad. R Ashwin will take over as No. 1 spinner with Ravindra Jadeja being the second spinner. A surprise inclusion has been leg-spinner Rahul Sharma after an impressive performance in first class cricket and last season IPL with Pune Warriors.

Concerned with pacers the selectors went for karnataka medium-pacer Sreenath Aravind and Varun Aaron who was part of the ODI squad in England but did not play, will replace Zaheer Khan.

Gautham Gambhir will open the batting with either Parthiv Patel or Ajinkya Rahane who played in the difficult conditions of England will replace the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj singh. The middle order comprises of Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Team India miss five of the eleven players who won India the World Cup are facing a big challenge at home with a young inexperienced side against an intimidating England side.

Engalnd have won just once in the last 10 ODI's on Indian Soil, which included a thrilling tie during the World Cup in Bangalore in March. But England are well prepared after a dominant home season when they beat India 4-0 in the Test series to take over as the world's number one team, and also won the one-dayers 3-0.

Cook, however, refused to take victory for granted against a depleted home team missing key players, "I don't see any relation between what happened in England and what's going to happen out here, they might lack the international experience but are quite experienced with the playing conditions," Cook said ahead of the first one-dayer at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

The visitors won both their warm-up games, first by defending 219 and second by setting up a daunting 367, while Indian hopefuls and discards fought in a dreary Challenger Series. So with England completing their soil tests in style.

Kevin Pietersen returns for England after being omitted for the one-dayers against India at home, but the tourists are without pace spearheads James Anderson who is being rested, and Stuart Broad who is injured.

Tim Bresnan, Jade Dernbach and Steven Finn will head the tourists' pace attack, which also includes 22-year-old uncapped Stuart Meaker.

Despite injuries to star players and the humiliating defeats on English soil, India appeared unfazed. "England played very well in England and deserved to win, but we will do well at home," said middle-order batsman Raina.

The remaining four matches after the Hyderabad opener will be played in New Delhi on October 17, Mohali on the 20th, Mumbai on the 23rd and Kolkata on the 25th. England will round off the tour with a Twenty20 game in Kolkata on October 29.

A real test for Team India's young guns as they look to take revenge against England.

I was more surprised than hurt at being dropped: Harbhajan

New Delhi, Oct 12: Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh says he was more surprised than hurt when he was axed from the Indian Cricket ODI team for the first two ODIs against England.

"I wouldn't say I was hurt. I was more surprised. I wish the younger guys all the best. I am more than happy to share my experience with them like I was helped by Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly while I was coming up," Harbhajan said on Wednesday.

Dropped following a lacklustre tour of England, Harbhajan said that despite not being a part of Indian side, he would like to see his teammates take revenge over England in the five-match series, starting on Friday in Hyderabad.

England recently blanked India 0-4 in the Test series before inflicting a humiliating 0-3 defeat in the five-match one-day series at their backyard.

Harbhajan, on his part had a dismal show, as he took only two wickets in 69.4 overs at an average of 143.50 and economyof rate 4.11 before he suffered a stomach injury during the second game and was ruled out for the rest of the tour.

"Harbhajan Singh is immaterial. What is important is India must beat England in the five-match take their revenge, which I am sure they would over the next two weeks," he said.

"Ultimately, we are all playing for the country. We all are looking to exact revenge against a team who were so good against us recently," he added.

The feisty spinner also said that India's defeat in England hurt him more than his own omission and it continues to be a recurring nightmare for him.

"It took a lot of hardwork for us to reach to the top. And we wouldn't rest till we wrest it back. We won't rest..," he said.

Critics in recent times have found fault with Harbhajan's bowling, saying it was not penetrative enough but the bowler begged to differ.

"First of all you must decide what you expect from a bowler in limited overs format. Do you expect him to take a five-for everytime he bowls his 10 overs or do you want him to put the squeeze on and force the opposition to play into your hands?," asked Harbhajan.

"In a low-scoring match, you would expect him to take wickets. On a belter of a track, you want him to dry up the runs," he added.

In the 17 ODIs this year, the 31-year-old spinner barely conceded over four runs an over during the tours of South Africa and West Indies and in the World Cup.

"In the Caribbean, I took one for 24 from 10 overs, besides scoring 41 with the bat in Antigua to clinch the one-day series. I must have done something right to have survived for 13 years. Who can be more concerned about my performance than myself?" he said.

"I would do what my team wants me to do. I can't keep adjusting every time somebody fancies to write about me. All I can say is that I am now completely fit and full of vigour. I am ready to put my best foot forward."

India turned out to be an inferior side against a rampant England in an away summer but a series of injuries also played a part, including one to Harbhajan in the second Test at Trent Bridge, which skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni often mentions as the moment when his team completely lost its bearing.

Injuries were also an issue with the IPL side Mumbai Indians, but unlike the Indian team, it rode over its misfortune and won its maiden Champions League Twenty20 title last Sunday.

Under stand-in-skipper Harbhajan Singh, the Mumbai Indians often came back from hopeless situations, including the one in the finals to emerge victorious.

"It's fair to say we were underdogs. We lost key players and the balance of the side was skewed. But none of us ever lost belief that we could do it," said Harbhajan, who led the team in place of regular captain Sachin Tendulkar.

Harbhajan, as skipper, received praise from all quarters. His former captain Sourav Ganguly found his approach refreshing.

"It's never easy to captain a T20 side. Every delivery can make you doubt your decision. I decided early to attack at all time. Often, opposition senses.

I had access to Yuvraj and Harbhajan: Majeed

London, Oct 11: who is at the heart of the spot-fixing scandal, boasted to the undercover reporter Mazhar Mahmood of the now defunct tabloid, News of the world, that he " had access" to Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh".

Majeed also dropped the names of West Indies' Chris Gayle and Australia's Ricky Ponting and Brett Lee, but did not explain what he meant by this.

Mahmood had recorded this conversation, which was re-played on the fourth day of the trial of Pakistani cricketers in the Southwark Crown Court.

Majeed was also heard describing the former IPL commissioner, Mike Gatting, Phil Tufnell, Geoffrey Boycott and Imran Khan as "good friends".

In this series of name-dropping, Majeed has also mentioned a discussion with Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt about setting up a Twenty20 Cricket tournament in Pakistan.

Mahmood, the undercover journalist who carried out the sting operation that resulted in spot-fixing charges being levelled at three Pakistani cricketers Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer, gave evidence as a prosecution witness. He described in detail and played tapes of his encounters with Majeed.

Mahmood, who had posed as an Indian businessman in the sting operation, was in court shielded behind a blue screen to protect his identity from the public.

Majeed claimed he had been "fixing" matches for two and a half years and confirmed that he controlled several Pakistan cricket team for this purpose, including Butt, Pakistan's Test Cricket match captain at that time, and pacemen Asif and Aamer.

The first two have pleaded "not guilty". Aamer appears to have entered a "guilty" plea, but this cannot be officially stated as there are reporting restrictions imposed by the presiding judge, Mr Justice Cooke.

Previously, jurors were shown footage of Majeed being handed £140,000 cash in batches of £50 by Mahmood on the eve of the Lord's Test match last year.

The former lined these up on a table in front of him, and counted one of the bundles. Thereafter, he told the journalist when precisely three no-balls would be bowled by Aamer and Asif the next day.

Mahmood's testimony is crucial to the prosecution argument. He lured Majeed into allegedly agreeing to a plot during Pakistan's 2010 tour of England, to get the three Pakistani cricketers to bowl pre-determined no-balls.

Aftab Jafferjee, the prosecuting barrister, highlighted that point - in one instance, Majeed phoned Aamer at 1.30am, 3am and 6am on the first day of the Test.

The jury was shown tapes of the action from Lord's, pausing to see Aamer's "enormous" overstepping of the popping crease and Asif's no ball.

It also emerged that Majeed was not only dealing in no-balls with the undercover tabloid journalist, but also at least three other underworld figures, trying to fix other events during the match.

One of these was referred to in the court as the head of a "shady" Indian syndicate. Majeed made dozens of calls to the unidentified man, and claimed that "my guy in India makes £40-50,000" on every fixed no-ball.

Jafferjee remarked: "It is as if the sport simply is there as a vehicle with which money is to be made by fixing aspects of the game." As the details were read out, Butt sat pensively in the dock, watching proceedings, his arms folded.

Top Eng players to be hot properties in IPL auction

London, Oct 9: Top England cricketers are in line for million-dollar deals in the next auction of the League after their side's dominating performance against India in the recent series, according to a report. Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Swann, Eoin Morgan, James Anderson and Stuart Broad are primary targets after the profile of England players skyrocketed after their side wrested the world Test number one spot from India in August, according to 'Sunday Mirror'.

That will make them among the hottest properties in the auction for the cash-rich Twenty20 league, likely to be held in December. IPL  Cricket Commissioner Rajiv Shukla said he would do his best to ensure that England players feature in the next edition.

"I'll try my level best to get them. There is no doubt the England team are doing very well. They have improved a lot, and possess a number of outstanding players. Of course, we would like that talent to be in the IPL," Shukla was quoted as saying by the tabloid.

The IPL's fifth season runs from April 4 to May 27 next year and the final stages clash with the start of England's home international summer. The first Test against West Indies begins on May 17 and England players may have problems to play IPL for the full tournament.

"The main thing for franchises is the availability of these players. If they are available, up to what time are they available? This is the issue that will need to be sorted out. The fixture list is always a problem when it comes to signing the best players from England. We will have to see how we can deal with that," Shukla said.

With last-ball six, RCB powers through to semi

Bangalore, Oct 5: Young KB Arun Karthik turned out to be an unlikely hero hitting a stunning six off the last delivery of the match to power Royal Challengers Bangalore to the semi-final of the Champions League Twenty20 Cricket beating South Australia Redbacks by two wickets. RCB thus join Mumbai Indians, New South Wales Blues and Somerset in the last four.

The Redbacks had scored a commanding 214 for two in 20 overs which the RCB chased down with two wickets in hand. With six needed of the last delivery, Daniel Christian bowled a slower one just outside the off-stump and Karthik who plays for Tamil Nadu waited for the delivery and swung it over mid-wicket as Redbacks players looked stunned.

Not everyday that a team that has a batsman who scored century (Daniel Harris) and a bowler who has taken five -wicket haul end up on the losing side. A swashbuckling century by Daniel Harris and a smashing 70 from Callum Ferguson powered South Australia Redbacks to 214 for two in 20 overs. It looked an imposing total but RCB gave a fitting reply courtesy Tillekaratne Dilshan (74, 47 balls) and Virat Kohli (70, 36 balls) who added 100 runs in 8.5 overs before Tait came back to bowl an inspiring second spell.

In the penultimate over of the match, he swung it in Redbacks' favour taking three wickets to end with a spectacular figures of five for 31 in a match dominated by willow. However the match hung in balance with seven required of the last 2-ball. Sreenath Aravind got one off the second last ball before Karthik got into the act.

The seeds of victory were however sown by Kohli and Dilshan, expecially the former who played one of his best T20 knocks. He hit four boundaries and six sixes, most were proper cricketing shot. Dilshan as usual hit a few lusty blows mixed with cheeky shots in between.

Warner blasts New South Wales into the semis

Chennai, Oct 4: David Warner smashed a blistering unbeaten century as New South Wales dumped defending champions Chennai Super Kings out of the Twenty20 Champions League with a 46-run thrashing in Chennai on Tuesday.

Electing to bat, New South Wales posted an imposing 201 for two, riding on Warner's 69-ball 135 not out, and Chennai needed to chase down the target in 17 overs if they were to qualify for the semifinals from Pool A.

Chennai, however, managed to score 155 all out in their last league match.

With the result, NSW and the Mumbai Indians qualified for the semi-finals after having collected six and five points respectively at the end of their league engagements.

Chennai could only win one out of their four matches and finished at the bottom of the five-team Pool A.

Chasing a daunting target, Chennai made a strong start with openers Mike Hussey (37) and  (17) adding 55 runs for the cause before first wicket they lost the way later on.

The openers departed in the space of seven balls with Hussey was the first to depart while Vijay followed soon after. Hussey's 27-ball cameo consisted of seven fours.

Steve O'Keefe, who picked up the key wicket of Vijay proved it was no fluke by accounting for another top batter, Suresh Raina (28) to leave Chennai reeling at 88/3 after 10 overs. Raina hit one six and five fours in his 14-ball stay at the crease.

S Badrinath was bowled by Clark for 13 in the 15th over soon after hitting a four, while R Ashwin (1) was caught by Henriques off Smith in the next over.

Doug Bollinger (17) and Nuwan Kualsekara (18) took the Chennai total past 150-run mark with some good clean hitting before Mitchell Starc sealed the issue in favour of his team, picking up both wickets in the 19th over.

Earlier, Warner hit his second Twenty20 century, laced with eight sixes and 11 fours to propel NSW to a challenging total. He also put on a stand of 101 runs in just 10.5 overs with Steven Smith (31).

The duo were in absolute command during their rip-roaring second-wicket stand. The pair joined forces after Warner and Shane Watson (21) put on 54 for the first wicket, and were not separated till Watson was caught by Dhoni off Ashwin in the seventh over.

Warner went on to complete his first hundred in the Twenty20 league with a single off Nuwan Kulasekara's fourth ball of the 18th over.

NSW made a good start as opener Watson took Doug Bollinger for special treatment in the second over, clobbering him for three fours.

Warner too joined the party as he hit spinner R Ashwin for two consecutive fours in the fifth over as NSW openers took the team past 50-run mark in the next over.

Chennai got their first breakthrough in the form of Watson. The Australian tried to slog but only ended up top-edging it to the wicket-keeper.

New man in, Smith in the company of Warner, managed to keep the scoreboard ticking by running well between the wickets and picking up occasional boundaries.

The dropped chance proved costly for Chennai as the Aussie opener brought up his 50 with his seventh four of the innings in the 12th over.

Warner was in ominous form as he first plundered Bollinger for a six and a four in the 13th over and then accumulated 15 runs off Shadab Jakati in the next over, courtsey a six and two fours.

Dhoni's gamble to introduce Raina into the attack too failed to stop Warner as he hit him for a six and a four.

For Chennai, Kulasekara and Ashwin picked up a wicket each.

CLT20: RCB thrash Somerset by 51 runs

Bangalore, Oct 3: RCB's passage into the semis will depend on if Warriors (4 points in 3 games) can beat Somerset (3 from 3 games) and beat South Australia Redbacks by a handsome margin.

Chasing a target of 207, Peter Trego made a 38-ball-58 as Somerset gave a spirited chase but once the Bangalore bowlers cleaned up the top order, the English side were never really in the hunt.

Trego smashed six boundaries and three sixes and added 61 off only 38 balls with James Hildreth (15) for the third-wicket stand. The right-hander was merciless against Gayle, creaming 24 runs in an over with two sixes and two fours.

When openers Trego and Craig Kieswtter (26) raised early hopes of a spectacular chase, Bangalore skipper Daniel Vettori chipped in with timely breakthroughs, claiming couple of wickets in an over.

Arun Karthik, making his CLT20 debut was impressive behind the wickets. Vettori forced an outside edge of Kieswetter to wicketkeeper Karthik and a top edge of Merve saw the keeper gobbling up the ball as Somerset were reduced to 48 for two.

Chris GayleKarthik was at it again to pocket James Hildreth (15) off a short ball from pacer Dirk Nannes.

Left-arm seamer Sreenath Arvind took two wickets for while Rajoo Bhatkal claimed one.

Earlier, put into bat, RCB ran up a powerful 206 for six, the highest total in the CLT20 this season. Gayle, who was in an aggressive mood, smashed eight sixes and four boundaries during his 46-ball 86. Thanks to his pyrotechnics, RCB belted a CLT20 high 14 sixes in an innings.

After a dismal outing for most part of the tournament, Gayle let his bat do the talking, that had had the English bowlers scurrying for cover. He was particularly severe against George Dockrell who conceded 21 runs in an over, including three towering sixes.

Trego was also treated with utter disdain, the towering Jamaican taking 19 runs in the medium pacer's first over. Trego conceded as many as 50 runs in three overs.

Gayle had failed to get going in the first two games, but this time round the Jamaican was at his imperious best, hitting the ball all over the park. Gayle, dropped by Joss Butler off Steven Kirby at 4, capitalised the reprieve.

After losing his opening partner Tillakaratne Dilshan (23), Gayle joined hands with consistent Virat Kohli (33) as the second wicket pair stitched a belligerent 70 off 40 balls.

Saurabh Tiwary scored 18 runs while adding 49 runs for the third wicket in Gayle's company. In the latter part of the innings, Mayank Agarwal made a 8-ball 19, including two sixes.

Trinidad and Tobago beat Chennai by 12 runs

Chennai, Oct 2: The semi-final door was virtually shut on defending champions  Super kings as they lost the crunch Group A clash by 12 runs to Trinidad and Tobago, in Chennai on Sunday.

Chasing a small target of 124, all Chennai could manage was just 111 for six as batting was extremely tough on the MA Chidambaram wicket.

Off-break bowler Sunil Narine emerged as star performer for T&T as be bowled exceptionally well, claiming three wickets and giving away just eight runs in his four overs.

Coming into the crucial, Chennai did well in the first half by restricting the rivals to a paltry 123 for eight but the target could have been less had they not conceded 49 runs in the last five overs.

T&T managed those 49 runs largely on the back of a heroic innings from Kevon Cooper, who hit a 10-ball 28 with the help of three sixes and a four.

Opener William Perkins (34) top scored for the T&T while Adrian Barath (23) also played a useful knock.

Australian paceman Doug Bollinger (3/30) and spinner Shadab Jakati (2/18) bowled well for Chennai in the first half as they shared five wickets between them.

The target was not too big but batting was not easy and the small score proved quite difficult to achieve for the Chennai, who now have lost two of the three matches played.

Dwayne Bravo was top scorer for Chennai with his unbeaten 32 but that only reduced the defeat margin.

Now Chennai need to win their last match against New South Wales Blues on Tuesday and hope that a mathematical miracle help them make the cut for the semi-finals.

T&T registered their first win and interestingly they too stand a chance to qualify for the semi-finals as they take on Cape Cobras in their last group outing on Tuesday.

Anything can happen in Group A and a clear picture will emerge only on Tuesday as all the teams including NSW, Cape Cobras, T&T along with Chennai, who have the poorest run-rate, are in the semi-final hunt at least mathematically.

Mumbai are at the top with five points.

Chennai needed 61 runs from the last five overs as they managed only 63 runs before that, having lost five top-order batsmen.

Bravo and Mahendra Singh Dhoni were at the crease but the skipper became third vicitm of Narine, who had earlier dimissed Murali Vijay (6) and Suresh Raina (2).

Strokemaking was not easy although Bravo did his bit by smashing an unbeaten 22-ball 32 and Albie Morkel managing 18 of 12 balls but that proved insufficient in the end.

Chennai did not have a great start as they lost Vijay, Raina and Michael Hussey (13) within the power-play period and with just 27 runs on the board.

By the half-way mark the hosts had also lost Wriddhiman Saha (8), leg before to Cooper, needing another 76 runs. Only four runs had reduced from the target that S Badrinath (15) ran himself out in a mix up with Dhoni.

Earlier, Cooper helped his side go past the 100-run mark as he reeled off three sixes and a four in his 10 ball knock before getting out in the last ball of the innings.

Runs did not come freely for the Caribbean batsmen after deciding to bat as Bollinger and Albie Morkel bowled tight, although the pacemen were punished when strayed.

Bravo and Jakati continued the good work as only three boundaries came in the first eight overs with Trinidad and Tobago managing just 34 runs on the board.

The agile Chennai fielders supported the bowlers superbly although left-arm spinner Jakati dropped a chance off his own bowling when Lendl Simmons smashed one straight to the bowler.

Perkins came out of the shell as he first hit a six off R Ashwin in the ninth over and then lofted Jakati for his second big shot but only to get out in the next ball, handing S Badrinath an easy catch.

Simmons ran himself out in the next over and then Jakati struck the rivals big blow by dismissing dangerous Darren Bravo (1) off his own bowling.

Skipper Daren Ganga also did not help the team's cause as he top-edged one off Ashwin to Suresh Raina, leaving the side struggling at 72 for four in the 15th over.
